Adams County Gardender Abounds in Buckets of Blooms for Festive Occasions or Just a Few Stems to Brighten Your Table
Nancy Hanmer lives an idyllic life amid the flowers she grows for both the floral trade and the community in general. Her affinity for growing flowers started years ago and has continued to be a consuming passion in her life. Three years ago, after much soul searching and in-depth research into the legalities and feasibility of pursuing cut flower growing as a career, she took the plunge and started preparing for this life-changing series of events.
Many decisions had to be made and so much work had to be done before she could even consider which flowers to grow in her area. Her mind was swirling. When you love what you do though, you relish every aspect of the challenge. Nancy has been learning as she goes, and being a quick study has helped her to overcome most of the obstacles that arise when starting any new business. For instance, where do you start 1000's of seedlings when you have no greenhouse? Why in your living room, laundry room, and kitchen, of course! Well, that worked the first year, but she quickly found it to be incapacitating to be dancing around all those flats and juggling them inside and out once they grew older. Nothing was too daunting for Nancy, though. She struggled through that first year and made time to research greenhouses; and the following year she, along with the help of devoted friends, constructed her first greenhouse. What a Godsend that was! Blessings abound at Greystone Flower Farm! So much so that Nancy is already negotiating to have another greenhouse built. Business is Blooming!!! And, Nancy credits much of that to her becoming a member of the National ASCFG (Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers), coming into contact with and learning from successful cut flower growers all over the country.
Finding a market and honing her skills in marketing are other areas that she excels in. Many florists are now ordering both her field-grown flowers and the flowers she grows under cover year round. Floral designers recognize the quality of having flowers that are cut at the break of dawn and are delivered fresh, receiving flowers which have never been out of water. This freshness is passed on to the florists' customers and the result is a product that has staying power and that lasts days longer than flowers shipped in from California or even farther.
Many folks love the idea of having fresh flowers. For a country wedding or even a birthday party, it's hard to find a flower that is soft enough, romantic enough to create the image you are seeking. That is where Nancy's "buckets of blooms" are just the thing. Just let her know what you are looking for, colors you desire, and you can pick them up fresh from the farm. Whether it's buckets or handfuls, Nancy Hanmer is ready to cater to your every wish. She can help to create just the look you want.
